Pigeon John and Flynn Adam are ROOT BEER. Since they named their project after the soda, Flynn’s got all kinds of root beer knowledge down, like the fact that it comes from sarsparilla root and that the bite in Barq’s is attributed to a dose of caffeine (that root beer generally is without). We also established that IBC rules as well as A&W on tap at A&W restaurants (which I never see out here in Cali). Oh, starting July 4th, you’ll be able to listen to their entire album off their Myspace.
Jeremy (Dark Horse Comics) and Curtis say Hi. Jeremy just flew down from Portland and Curtis used to be in indie/emo/hardcore bands Split Lip and Chamberlain. ”Magnetic 62nd” is my favorite Chamberlain track, just in case you were wondering.
Whenever I travel to other countries, I try to shoot as much of the cultural landscape as possible for your viewing pleasure. But the funny thing is back here in L.A., we have some of the best sightseeing in the world. Like Olvera Street, which is historically known as the oldest block in the city. Ironically enough, much thanks to Chief James E. Davis (who I mentioned a few posts back) who provided prison inmates to help restore and preserve Olvera Street back in the 1920s.
The cornerstone of Olvera Street is Cielito Lindo, a Mexican food stand that is known for its taquitos. And more importantly, the runny guacamole that they pour all over the homemade rolled tacos.
The street is lined with all sorts of vendors selling traditional Mexican gifts and souvenirs.
Mexican wrestling masks, copyright-infringing t-shirts, and bootleg stuffed animals. I shoulda nabbed that blue tee, it said “Los Doyers.”
You’ll also find booths of delicious Mexican candies and snacks.
Azucar.
As the sign says, the Avila Adobe is the oldest standing house in Los Angeles, and has been preserved for almost 2 centuries now.
It’s definitely worth a visit. 845 N. Alameda Street.
Right down the street from us is the new Five Four offices. Five Four is a popular menswear line, far from streetwear, more fashion-directed and pretty serious. As I’ve told you before, Ben and I have been friends with Andres and Dee since we all started pretty much the same time. We ended up heading in different directions with our brands but it’s always nice to check in on each other and get some different perspectives on things.
You probably saw Jay-Z wearing a Five Four shirt in his new D.O.A. video…
Andres and Dee also used The Hundreds Footware for their current lookbook. I didn’t even know they had paparazzi taking photos of me on the beach that day.
Dee’s office is cased with sports memorabilia that he’s been gifted over the years.
But his favorite piece so far is… yes, Pacino wrote that out to him.
This is Andres‘ office. Dee says it’s almost big enough to fit his ego.
These guys have some heavy things lined up for the next few seasons. Perhaps a pop-up shop on the way? And Five Four Women’s? We’ll see…
This is my other better-half, Ben. The 2 of us founded The Hundreds together and to this day, continue to do a horrible job of running it. For some reason, people oftentimes get us confused, so I explain it like this. I’m tall and hairless. He’s round and furry. I’m Harold. He is Kumar. I write blogs. Ben writes checks. Got it?
Anyways, Ben loaded up the van with a chunk of his sneaker collection and brought ‘em down here to TH HQ. There was a time when we were both pretty heavy into sneaker culture. Ben was into collecting shoes, I was into admiring them on other people and saving my money for more important things like Jamster ringtones and shutter shades. But that was years ago, I’m pretty clueless now as to what’s going on in SneakerLand. What’s up with Crocs?
Oh also he’s always nagging me to plug his Twitter. SO HERE IT IS. Please add him so he’ll leave me alone. Please.
Abram, on the left, just had his bachelor party in Vegas this past weekend. Headed by his brother Adam of course. I love that tee that Adam is wearing, POLICE STATE. It’s vintage The Hundreds from several years back. On the back of the tee, spelled out in blood splatter and police arsenal acting as lettering, it reads “QUIS CUSTODIET IPSOS CUSTODES?” Which is literally translated as “Who will police the police?”
I found the photo for that shirt deep in the bookstacks of L.A.’s Central Public Library downtown. It’s a decomposed photograph of former LAPD Police Chief James E. Davis. Davis headed the department in the 1920s and ’30s, which just so happened to be the most corrupt period in LAPD’s history, thanks to Chief Davis, who’s unsurprisingly regarded as perhaps the most corrupt Police Chief in LAPD history.
Did you see that movie Changeling with Angelina Jolie last year, about the LAPD police scandal surrounding the Wineville Chicken Coop Murders? Yeah, he was responsible for that debacle. Ben also told me that they now use the same exact photo of Chief Davis for Southland’s opening credits.
I’m not sure what any of that had to do with Abram’s Bachelor Party, but back to that.. I hear it went something like this:
